Why Jaw and Neck Tension Don’t Just “Go Away”. A Somatic Approach to Releasing Tension and Reconnecting With the Body
Tension in the jaw and neck is something many people experience.
It can show up as tightness when you wake up.
A feeling of holding through the day.
Or a quiet ache that never fully settles.
Often, we try to stretch it out.
Roll the shoulders.
Massage the area.
And sometimes that helps - for a moment.
But the tension tends to return.
Why is that?
From a somatic perspective, tension in the jaw and neck is not only physical.
It is often connected to the nervous system, to patterns of holding, and to the subtle ways we organise ourselves in daily life.
When the Body Holds More Than We Realise
The jaw and neck are areas where the body often stores ongoing, often unnoticed tension.
Clenching.
Holding back words.
Staying alert.
Trying to keep everything together.
And often, something else is present as well.
A quiet sense of control.
The jaw and neck are places where we steady ourselves.
Where we hold things in place.
Where we manage what we feel, what we say, and how we respond.
Not in a conscious way.
But in small, almost invisible patterns:
a slight tightening
a subtle holding
a reduction of movement
Over time, this can begin to feel normal.
The body learns to stay contained, even when it is no longer needed.
Why Stretching Alone Often Isn’t Enough
Many approaches focus on the muscles.
Stretching.
Strengthening.
Postural correction.
While these can be helpful, they don’t always reach the deeper pattern.
Because tension is not only something we do physically, but
something the nervous system maintains.
If the system remains in a state of subtle alertness or control, the body will often return to familiar holding patterns.
This is why change often needs to include:
the fascia
the nervous system
and the way we relate to what we feel in the body
Fascia, Tension, and the Feeling of Stiffness
Fascia responds not only to movement, but also to how we hold ourselves.
When the body stays in patterns of tension or containment, the fascia can become less adaptable.
This may feel like:
stiffness in the neck
tightness in the jaw
a sense of restriction in movement
Fascia release can support the body in softening these patterns.
But not through force.
Rather through a combination of:
gentle pressure
awareness
breath
and allowing the body to respond at its own pace
The Missing Piece: Nervous System Regulation
Lasting change often happens when the body no longer needs to hold in the same way.
When the nervous system begins to experience safety, the need for control can soften.
Muscles don’t need to stay engaged.
The jaw doesn’t need to clench.
The neck can begin to release.
This is not something we make happen.
It is something we allow.
Through somatic awareness, the body begins to recognise that it does not need to organise itself through tension in the same way.
Reconnecting With the Body in Daily Life
One of the most important parts of this work happens outside of sessions or workshops.
In small, everyday moments.
Noticing the jaw while you are working.
Sensing the neck while you are walking.
Feeling the breath while you pause.
These moments begin to gently interrupt familiar patterns of holding.
Not by correcting them.
But by bringing awareness to them.
Over time, this allows the body to discover different ways of being:
less effort
less control
more ease
A Different Way of Working With Tension
Rather than asking:
How do I get rid of this tension?
You might begin to ask:
What is my body holding in place right now?
Is there something I am trying to control or manage?
Can I notice this without immediately trying to change it?
This shift is subtle.
But it creates space.
And in that space, something can begin to soften.
A Gentle Invitation
If this resonates, and you’ve been experiencing ongoing jaw or neck tension, you are not alone.
This is something I see often in my work.
And it is something that can change -
not through forcing the body to let go, but through creating the conditions where it no longer needs to hold.
In my upcoming workshop, we explore:
fascia release techniques to support the body in softening
nervous system regulation to create a sense of safety
and simple daily practices to bring this into everyday life
A space to slow down.
To notice.
And to begin to relate to your body in a different way.
🌿 Somatic Reflection
Pause for a moment.
Bring your attention to your jaw.
Is there any holding there , even subtly?
Without changing anything, just notice.
Then let your awareness move to your neck.
What do you feel?
Stay with that for a few breaths.
There is nothing you need to do.
Just notice what is already here.
